Dear Manufacturer Representative:
It sure feels good to finally type these words...We cordially invite you to attend the 2021 Midwest Automotive Media Association (MAMA) Rally, which will take place on Oct. 12-14 kicking off with a Welcome Dinner on Oct. 12. We will once again offer media performance driving, scenic on-road routes, a technical off-road course and a fast autocross. To celebrate MAMA's 30th anniversary and maximize media participation, we will not be charging any fees to MAMA media members to attend, including the hotel stay.
SAFETY AND COVID PROTOCOLS
As in years past, safety remains a vital component to the success of the MAMA Rally. We ensure safety on the track by requiring helmets, and we conduct introductory laps with trained instructors to safeguard the vehicles and most importantly, our members. Given the increasing cases of the Delta variant and potential liability of spreading the virus while hosting an event like this, the best way we can ensure a safe and successful event is through proof of COVID-19 vaccinations at registration. Also, we will require all Rally participants, including media members, support staff, and OEM representatives to wear masks indoors except while eating and drinking. This step was taken with a great deal of thought and study of what’s happening both in our industry and the country at large.
We have to take these steps to protect everyone at the rally, their families back home, the community at large, and MAMA. We will have disposable masks available for anyone who needs them, hand sanitizer stations will be placed around the event, and we ask that you practice physical distancing throughout the event.
As you make your vehicle selections for the 2021 MAMA Rally, we ask you to keep in mind the full range of activities at the event. We use the track at Road America for evaluation of performance cars. There is an autocross for handling. Our off-road course has been designed by Jeep Jamboree professionals to provide appropriate terrain options for all levels of adventure vehicles and driver skill, and the streets around Road America offer scenic drive opportunities for photo and video. Please feel free to bring anything you have for our journalists to drive, but from experience we know the newest of the new vehicles get the most attention. So please consider bringing multiple examples of your new and/or notably updated vehicles in different trim levels.
Entry fee is $2,000 for up to five vehicles. Additional vehicles may be added at a cost of $400 each, with a cost cap of $5,000. This covers the cost of the track, off-road course, autocross, meals, etc.
If you would like a credit-card invoice payable through PayPal (no account needed), email Treasurer Larry Nutson at email@example.com. Otherwise, Larry will be sending out invoices. Please advise if you have any special invoicing requirements.
If you need attendees to sign a vehicle waiver, email it to Paul Strauss at firstname.lastname@example.org by September 30. We will distribute digital waivers to all attendees via email prior to the event.
Due to the special nature of high-horsepower vehicles, we offer specific arrangements for them. If you are bringing a vehicle that makes 500 or more horsepower (or has a high hp-to-weight ratio), you have the following options:
You can provide your own driver
We can provide a professional race-driving instructor who drives your car
We can provide a professional race-driving instructor who rides along in the passenger seat with the journalist
You can decide not to have a driver or instructor ride along
You can take advantage of our instructors for $300 each, which is our cost to make them available. The fee covers their time, room and board for the day. Please let us know ASAP if you need any instructors and how many.
Please note: If you decide to bring your own instructor, you will be responsible for their accommodations, but they are welcome to join all our meals at no extra cost.
As mentioned we have a new off-road course this year that is designed with options to accommodate all levels of capability. Whether your vehicle is designed for King of the Hammers level obstacles or just a drive up the rutted two-track to the family cabin, our course will allow our members to experience your vehicle’s prowess. We will have experienced trail guides on hand to ensure the safety of our members and the vehicles on the course.
The Patrick Hespen Memorial Autocross is the one competitive event at the rally where media members set lap times on Road America’s karting track in an effort to take home the Need For Speed trophy. A proud MAMA member for many years, Patrick Hespen loved the MAMA Spring Rally and often credited MAMA as his favorite media group. Patrick was doing PR for FCA when he passed in late 2014. The inaugural award was at the 2015 Spring Rally. This is a great opportunity for the media to safely test their skills against one while experiencing the handling characteristics of a number of vehicles.
FAMILY VEHICLE OF THE YEAR
As an added incentive to attend, the Midwest Automotive Media Association will once again be voting for the Family Vehicle of the Year Awards in our mainstream and luxury categories.
We will announce the runners-up for both categories at the Day 2 lunch, and the final winners will be announced at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show, planned for February.
To be considered, a vehicle must have four doors, be new or significantly updated within the last 12 months and be available for evaluation at the 2021 MAMA Summer Drive (which took place in August) or at the 2021 MAMA Rally. With the implementation of the luxury category a couple years ago, there is no longer a price cap for any FVOTY candidates.
If you have any questions about FVOTY eligibility, please contact Tim Healey at email@example.com.
